My T60p has no screen visible

Symptoms, for quite a while now there has been horizontal lines on my screen that would go away when I pushed on the upper right corner of the bezel. I suspect the chassis is in torsion due to my beloved assistant dropping my laptop several months ago. This morning after a couple of hours of use I closed the lid which puts it in standby. Upon opening the lid there was a faint imgae briefly where I attempted to adjust the brighness and then restart the machine. After it rebooted the the screen was dark. with the use of a bright flashlight I was able to hook up an external monitor and am now working from that.
From my reading here it seems it might be a bad cable or an inverter card and hopefully not a CCFL. What is the order of diagnosis and are there good video guides or manuals available on the net.
I bought this machine new in May of 06 and have developed a disproportionate attachment to it
as I am not fond of the wide screen machines. Am I doomed to a T5xx or a T7xx or is there an economical alternative for a soldering pencil luddite?
Thanks in advance.
