New mobo for T61 7665-12G?

Hi, I have one of the faulty nVidia boards - FRU 41W1489 - in my T61 7665-12G, unfortunately I were too late to get it replaced by Lenovo, so now I have to find an Intel version - I just got one of the first warnings today, the videodriver stopped working eventhough I keep my laptop as cool as possible 56 - 65C.

So I have been looking for the FRU 41W1487 with the Intel videochip but I cant find any that are not too pricy, so my question is: are there no other alternative boards that can be used in this model? What if you disregard the Firewire port? I can always block the hole with some plastic and superglue.

My concern is just that it has to work with the rest of the HW and fit into the casing. Also, I would like to still be able to get the 1440x900 resolution.

I have been looking on this page http://thinkpad-wiki.org/T61

14.1" 4:3
Intel GM965
42W7648 Merom, FPR
42W7872 Penryn

14.1" 16:10
Intel GM965
41W1487 Merom
42W7866 Penryn

15.4" 16:10
Intel GM965
42W7651 Merom
42W7875 Penryn

Merom CPUs: T7100, T7300, T7500, T7700, T7800, X7800, X7900

Penryn CPUs: T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500, X9000

I have got the T7300 Merom in mine, and as far as I can read it can be used with penryn boards. But are there anything else I should be aware of or will all the above mentioned boards fit in my casing?

And what about the heatsink, will it fit on all these boards?

Do all the above boards work with the 16:10 14.1" 1440x900 screen without any problems?

Hope someone can answer this before my laptop shuts down:)

Thanx in advance:)

With kind regards

Jan

It must be the same size, so the 41W1487 and 42W7866 will work. The others won't fit. Your nVIDIA fan will work with Intel graphics. (not the other way around). Everything else is the same. 1440X900 is no problem.

Here, a 41W1487 in stock:

http://www.lapstore.de/a.php/shop/lapst ... RU_41W1487

And earlier this week I returned my 42W7866 to this store (because Lenovo fixed my machine), so that should be up soon as well.

Thank you for that, but which ones of those will fit into the casing of the 41W1489 Merom, T61 7665-12G? I think it would be nice if you edit your post and point that out:) That is if you have experience with other boards fitting, than the ones richk mentioned:)

You really should know by now that you have a 14.1" widescreen!

Hi:) Do I have a widescreen???

Joke aside, yes I know that, but thats not the issue here. I need a new mobo(mainboard, systemboard, motherboard) and so will many other people soon, when their nVidia chip gets loose from their mobo. Then it would be nice with a posting like this that explains in details which mobo's that fit in which casing.

Reballing(getting the chip taken off and adding new and better soldering) is not really an option for many people, I just checked yesterday here in Denmark, and the price was 2495 dkk. For that price you can buy a "new" second hand T61 or a "brandnew" laptop of other brand.

And as far as I can tell you can use the 14.1" non-widescreen mobo in the 14.1" widescreen casing with the 14.1" widescreen LCD.

What I would like to know is all the FRU numbers that fit, and if there is a chance that some of the FRU from the 15.4" will fit - that would widen the search a bit.

Also which of the FRU that has ie1394 firewire in the front?

And if it doesn't have ie1394 firewire in the front, will it still fit? Which FRU?

And which of the FRU that handles Merom and can handle Penryn, and which ones that can't(or can with bios MOD).

This info would be nice for other people, they could just look at this list and say "hey, now I know what to get" without having to do much research:)

For people that don't know this already, the 16:10 is widescreen.

And for those who don't know this already, the FRU is the partnumber of the mainboard.

EDIT: Is it possible to use the mainboard from another model, and if so then which FRU to use?

Would this R61 mainboard not work with the LCD and the casing?

No joking at all, but you are completely mistaken, as exactly this is the very issue here: The fact that you have a 14,1" widescreen T61 clearly limits your choice of mainboard options as defined n the listing of all possible T61 mainboard combinations. You only need some education in order to understand how to help yourself. :P

The form factor and size of the screen defines the form factor and size of the casing, and thus reduces your theoretical mainboard choices from a whopping sixteen possibilities to merely four. Leaving aside the ill fated nVIDIA boards, you are left only with two choices. We will leave it as an intellectual excercise to your personal discretion which of the two remaining mainboards to choose, although any of both would be valid choices for your Merom CPU. While the Penryn board can handle Merom CPU's without any issues, the other way round doesn't apply as easily, requiring a patched BIOS (google for "T61 Middleton BIOS").
Insomniac1971 wrote:And as far as I can tell you can use the 14.1" non-widescreen mobo in the 14.1" widescreen casing with the 14.1" widescreen LCD.
This only applies to the older T60 generation for 14.1" and 15" form factor machines. For the T61 generation there are no more 15" screens/casings, but only 15.4" widescreen, and these don't match their 14.1" counter part anymore. Nonetheless, it is possible to build a 14.1" T61 mainboard into a 15" T60 casing (check my sig), but this is yet another story. ;)

What about other models mainboards, like the R61? Would that fit?

No idea, and as this would require too much time for investigation i'll leave this to you to find out. Thanks in advance for providing us later with the results of your search efforts! ;)

In any case, as the R61 shares a lot of compatible parts with the T61, i would assume that mainboards of the same form factor might possibly fit. But as i don't know any specifics about the respective mainboard layout differences, if any, this is something which should be answered by someone who does know.

I remember that someone from the German language thinkpad-forum.de once mentioned that he/she is using a R61 mainboard in a T61 casing, but this is just a faint memory without any suitable details.

Hi guys, an update - my T61 is still running good, except that due to defective LCD its now being used as media center in my living room attached to an 19" screen(when I get my hands on a LCD it will go to my Girlfriend).

Instead I now use an R61 - I got it cheap and cloned my hdd onto a new 320GB - also the UJ-862 DVD-RW(from T61) fits in the ultrabase with a bezel(couldn't find one here for reasonal price so I used some plastic on both top and bottom and it works). The DVD-RW is S-ATA, but works fine(original drive were DVD-CDRW Atapi IDE).
