Is it possible to upgrade a 32-bit system to a 64-bit?

#1 Post by fiebigc » Thu Sep 01, 2011 6:07 pm

Is it possible to upgrade a XP 32-bit system to a Windows 7 64-bit system by simply re-imaging the hard drive on a T60p laptop?

Is driver compatibility going to be an issue?

Manufacturer: IBM / Lenovo
Model Number: T60p
Purchase Date: June 2007
OS: XP Pro 32-Bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz
Ram: 2 GBs
Video Card: ATI Mobility FireGL V5250 512 MB
Hard Drive: 120 GBs

Thanks!

No -- there is no "upgrade/migration" from Windows XP to any version of Windows 7. See below:

I intend to "upgrade" by re-imaging the hard disk in other words formatting the hard drive and installing a fresh copy of Windows 7.

Originally I thought the hardware (CPU & RAM) was either 32-bit or 64-bit but the more I research the more I realize this wasn't the case.

Note: The T60 can "see" a maximum 3GB of RAM, regardless of how much physical memory is installed.

Thank you for pointing out the 3 GB limitation. That solidifies my decision to buy a new laptop versus trying to upgrade the current one.

Well it is. With an x86 ThinkPad those are the only two possibilities.

The software running on said hardware, however, can be 64-bit or 32-bit, the former running only on 64-bit machines, the latter running on either.

Do you need more than 3GB of RAM?
