T61p has games not finding compatible video

I need help with gaming issues. I have T61p - 6457-A24, 3Gb RAM, NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M video which WinXP 32 shows as 512Mb (but Lenovo Quickpath says came with 256Mb). This is a recently purchased system from IBM EPP and has been refurbished. I strongly suspect the motherboard was replaced.
Issues are various games will not start, cannot find video card. Older Microsoft games such as Midtown Madness 1 & 2, Diablo 1 & 2. I think it has to do with Direct3d which those games use. Other games such as EA Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam, Insane offroad, MS Dungeon Siege LOA run fine.
Midtown Madness 1 & 2 give error on launch "No compatible video cards can be found". Diablo 2 gives similar error.
I am new to this forum, although I worked 20 years with IBM in IT support and worked on most IBM Thinkpad models from Thinkpad 600 & 770 systems through the T42p & X40 units.
Windows XP pro is fully patched, I re-installed DirectX and have tried a few different drivers for the NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M. Issues remain the same.
