Hi!

My t60p is having a strange problem. When starting up or restarting xp, one out of three times xp freezes to the startup splash screen showing the xp flag and bar only dimly.

When this happens hdd activity stops. The only way to the all up and running is to remove the AC adapter and battery. Then it boots again for a while.

Done so far:

Ran memtest86+ and pc-doctor memory tests - ok
Ran all pc-doctor tests -ok
Changed hdd - Xp freezes even with clean install to another hdd
Tried with another ram stick. I'll have to swap the other stick too. - I currently have 2*1GB
Tested both hdd's with manufacturer diag software - ok

I still have to take out the bios battery, but I doubt it'll be of any help.

Once I get the xp to boot it runs fine.

Never seen anyhing like this. Any thoughs?

Best,
Hannu

Take the 'other' RAM stick out and try again.

How the battery?

Try running the machine on AC adapter only, with battery removed and let us know what happens.

Sorry. Forgot a add that one. Battery seems to be fine, no difference when running without battery.

I'll mess with the memory sticks. Let's see if it helps.

EDIT:

No help messing with memory. I disconnected the bios battery too. No change.

I've had this problem on a T60p in the past, and I found that my problem was heat-related. I experienced the problem if I rebooted after heavy CPU usage. Try cleaning out your cooling fan and making sure that your cooling fan assembly is making good contact with the CPU.
