My T61 died

#1 Post by TuuS » Thu Sep 22, 2011 2:57 pm

I have a T61 that I purchased new in 2007/8 that recently died. For a few months it would sometimes hibernate without warning. Sometimes requiring a restart, other times it would wake by pressing the power button, then one day last week it shut down and wouldn't restart.

Today I removed the optical and hd drive, and tried swapping the ram to be sure it wasn't a bad device. Today I actually got the screen to come on, once long enough to enter bios setup, but it shut down within seconds.

When I press the power button, the LEDs light up like it's going to boot, then a short "beep" and they go out except for the ac/power light.

I'm pretty sure it's a dead m/b but any thoughts or ideas?

Also, I purchased a "low-end" t61 on ebay and I'd like to know if I can use my cpu on the replacement computer.

Mine I believe is a T9300 cpu, 2.5ghz with 6mb cache, the one I purchased is a 1.8ghz. I believe the replacement is also an Nvidia graphics model, but I won't mind if it has the more reliable integrated intel graphics instead. Both are 15.4" widescreens. Mine has the lesser screen resolution, 1280x800 I think, but I'm not sure what the replacement has until it arrives. All I know is it is a lease return and it appears to have been used a lot less then mine (less wear), and it is probably older, has a lesser cpu and ram, only 80gb harddrive, but I'm hoping to use my cpu if it can be swapped.

Thanks in advance for any technical info you can give me.

Edit: Of all the people who read this, no one can even tell me if the cpu can be swapped?

Of all the people who have read this, probably all could have told you that the CPU can be swapped, provided the "new" motherboard is Penryn-capable.

This subject has come up so often, it's not even funny any more.
Forums are there to be READ as well. It's like doing your homework first.
And it's boring to see the same thing over and over again, because people are too lazy to check for themselves.
Which would probably explain why you/your question was ignored.

No need to become impatient and open up yet another thread. I have answered your question in this other thread you opened in parallel: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=99488.

I'd recommend you to check out and thoroughly read thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T61 from top to bottom, and also follow relevant cross links. It will answer already in advance even those questions which still didn't surface your mind, yet. ;)

I found that usually everything is already answered, and thus got used to simply search fine forums like this one here for the already given answers, using appropriate search terms combined with "-site:forum.thinkpads.com" in Google. This way one can retrieve standard answers to standard questions almost instantly. Works *very* much faster than opening a thread (almost wrote "threat") and wait for (possibly incomplete) answers.

I didn't mean to seem impatient. After being up for a day, I got no replies so I assumed I was to "long winded" in this post and I also had added new information since it was first posted, namely the replacement laptop has been substituted by the ebay seller, the original one was Menrom, but now he's shipping a Penryn based model. Thank you for answering my questions rumbero

ps. I run a support forum for one of the major p2p clients, so I know it's annoying when the same question is asked. My initial post was intended to get advice on what I should do/not do, and any advice on what may have failed. I eventually posted a more simple basic question only addressing the cpu swap.
