T60 2623-D6U Ultrabay DVD Drive problem!

#1 Post by Magliter » Fri Sep 30, 2011 9:50 pm

Windows 7 on my thinkpad

upgraded to windows 7 via USB dongle

my DVD Drive on the ultrabay won't work at all. It's lighting up but windows 7 doesn't see them.

I can't eject the drive at all unless I put a pin inside it.

Was working in XP SP3

Have you tried re-seating the drive or in another machine? You could try deleting the IDE drivers. Windows will re-install them when rebooted. Could try a Linux disc. That should tell you if it's hardware or software issue.

It's probably time fore a new drive. They're fairly inexpensive on ebay.

I'm not sure whether Windows 7 supports the Intel Mobile 945PM Express Chipset natively, in case it doesn't, you'll need the Intel Chipset Device Software. The Intel Driver Update Utility will probably tell you whether you need the Intel Chipset Device Software:

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

If you need it, the Intel Chipset Device Software should be installed directly after installation of Windows 7 and its latest service pack and before installing any other drivers.

From Intel's Readme:

"The Intel(R) Chipset Device Software installs Windows*
INF files to the target system. These files outline to
the operating system how to configure the Intel(R) chipset
components in order to ensure that the following features
function properly:

- Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
- PCIe Support
- IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
- SATA Storage Support
- USB Support
- Identification of Intel(R) Chipset Components in
the Device Manager"

"This software is designed for the latest Service packs
releases of above operating systems."

"7. It is recommended that the Intel(R) Chipset Device Software
be installed onto the target system prior to the
installation of other drivers."

Intel's Readme file:

You should also install Lenovo's System Interface Driver before installing other drivers. It's part of a driver package called Hotkey Features Integration:

It's probably not a good idea to install the Intel Chipset Device Software after having installed other drivers. If you have done so, be prepared to wipe the OS and re-install Windows 7.
