T61 Processor Upgrade from T7300 to T9300 Penryn Possible?

Hi All.

I'm looking to purchase a T61 (14" wide-screen) equipped with a T7300 processor. I have a good T9300 Penryn processor left over from another T61p that was parted out.

My question is: Can I sub the T9300 processor for the T7300 without knowing the model number, build specs, or board revision of the unit I want to purchase. I have no way of obtaining this info before purchase, and don't particularly want to go ahead with the purchase if the swap can't be done. The only further info I have is on the video, it has an Intel X3100 graphics chip. (Don't know if that is helpful or not, or whether it would help determine which board would be in the purchased unit.)

Any info would be appreciated, any alternative suggestions also.

Thanks. Regards.

Dave

In theory, you have less than 50% chance that the swap works.
The majority of T61 has non-Penryn compatible mobos.

Thank you Sir, that's what I was afraid of.
I may have to re-think my purchase and check out other 14" models, or change my expectations and move up to a 15" Thinkpad of some variation.
Thanks. Regards.

personally, i'd go after a T400 since that'll guarantee you penryn compatibility, and you wouldn't have to be concerned about the whole nvidia thing. the memory for the T400 is also a lot cheaper (~$40 USD or less for 8GB).

Thanks for the T400 suggestion...I may have to move from the dark ages of computing to the new era after all! It's just that I resist change so hard.
