#1 Post by clarkey » Sat Dec 23, 2017 3:39 pm

Hi all, new member hoping someone can help. I am repairing a X31 and need a copy of the XP pro recovery cd's, could anyone help me with a link to them as an ISO or zip etc?

Would be much appreciated.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

I have what I believe to be the WinXPP recovery disk set for the X31 but it will take me a day or two to create and upload the .ISOs. It consists of the Rescue and Recovery disk, along with 5 Product Recovery CDs. In the meantime if somebody else already has them online, please chime in and/or let me know.

I don't have that set but if you're willing, I'd be happy to add them to my archive as well which I am always willing to share when members here are in need.

hello and welcome to the forum..

i seem to have TWO sets of X331 recovery CD's BUT...
set #1 is a 3 CD set dated march 2003, set #2 is a 4 CD set dated Aug. 2003 but seems to be missing CD no. 1 which must be here SOMEPLACE..

easy enough to create .iso's but uploading is a PITA given the file size..

your best bet is the latest date CD's..

between all of us we should be able to put together something for you.. :)

saying "no rush" is like saying "see you in september".. :)

between ray and I (assuming i can find CD 1 of 4 of the august version) we can put something together..

sometimes it is easier to just make duplicates and mail them..

mail to the UK is trivial..

and, since mine are for machine type 2672 and 2673 i should ask what machine type is the X31 you have..?

I've started creating the .ISO files and have run into a slight problem with the second Product Recovery CD. Each time that I read that disk and create the .ISO file, upon checking the file with WinMD5 it generates a different checksum value. This means that I'm not getting a consistent read from the second disk, even though CDBurnerXP says that there's no data errors reading it. A little background: My process in creating the .ISO file is that I read the disk at least two times and compare the files to each other. This way I have good idea if the data is good. I use the WinMD5 program to calculate a checksum which I compare with. I then upload the .ISO, download it into another copy and verify the MD5 checksum to make sure that the FTP transfer was okay. I provide the MD5 checksum values on my web site so whoever downloads them can verify that their transfer was without any errors.

The disk set is one that I purchased from a non-IBM source that was burned on Verbatim CD-R disks, with hub labels printed with ""IBM Thinkpad X31 Product Recovery CD n". My notes said that I used this set to recover an X31 over 9 years ago. As far as I remember, I didn't have any problems with installing the OS on that system.

These are the FRU numbers that I'm getting from the volume labels:

Code: Select all

FRU Name of disk
41A4007 IBM ThinkPad Rescue and Recovery CD
24R8129 IBM ThinkPad X31 Product Recovery CD 1
24R8130 IBM ThinkPad X31 Product Recovery CD 2
24R8131 IBM ThinkPad X31 Product Recovery CD 3
24R8132 IBM ThinkPad X31 Product Recovery CD 4
24R8133 IBM ThinkPad X31 Product Recovery CD 5
Another strange thing I noticed is the that R&R CD for this X31 set (41A4007) does not have the same MD5 checksum as another "41A4007" .ISO image I generated about two years ago from an X41 recovery set. I'm going to try a different CD drive in the morning and let you know how it's working.

It's possible that the software on the CD was updated while keeping the same FRU, I guess.

Thanks both, it’s a 2673 if I can get them to download that would be great, I can always host an ftp site if need be.

Have used a W520 to create .ISO files from all six CDs. This time the R&R (41A4007) disk matches what I did for the X41 set a couple of years ago. I'm in the process of uploading them to my FTP site and will let you know when I've verified all of them. Was delayed a little bit today due to a lost of power in the neighborhood. Evidently somebody ran into a power pole on the expressway near my house at 3:30am and we were without power until about 2:30pm.

The X31 in my inventory that I used the recovery set on is a model type 2672.

Hi, having an issue with the restore, wondering if anyone has any tips.

For background

I have used rufus to create a bootable ISO on USB it seems to boot into the media fine.

When selecting restore the machine and to save no files it errors imediatley after accepting the terms and conditions with error “Product Recovery Failed during the convertion phase”

Searching the forum i have tried.

DBAN the HD, no change.

Disable the IBM predesktop area, no change.

Anyone have any other ideas, could it be this set is wrong for the machine?

Cheers

Unfortunately I have no experience attempting to execute the restore operation from a USB connected hard or flash drive with copies of the ISO files on it. All my recoveries are done by burning the ISOs onto blank optical disks and proceeding from there. For this X31 set, you should be booting the system with the 41A4007 Rescue and Recovery disk and then follow the on-screen instructions when swapping disks. The recovery operation is controlled by pre-programmed batch files and assumes that optical disk swapping will take place. I don't believe that you can simply put all of the ISOs on a single drive and then expect it to work.

When restoring a system containing a hard drive that already has an OS on it, I would recommend that you first wipe the drive. At least enough to get rid of any partitioning information. The DBAN utility should do that. I generally use a (now obsolete and hard to obtain) copy of PC Doctor for DOS to do a full erase of about the first 5% of the drive. Any disk utility program that erases the boot track and partition area is fine.

I would suggest that you confirm one way or the other that the hard drive itself is fully functional. Again, any disk utility program that verifies that each sector is accessible should be good enough.

I would also verify that the memory in the system is fully functional. Download a copy of memtest86+ from here: http://www.memtest.org/#downiso The program is available in several different formats; .ISO, diskette or USB flash drive. Once you have the program, boot the system and let it run for at least 3 complete passes through the diagnostics; probably 2-3 hours for a fully loaded (2GB) X31.

In some cases, I've seen that a non-functional MiniPCI card can prevent loading of an OS but the typical error is that the recovery process hangs somewhere in the middle and not immediately at the beginning.

If I can find one of my X31 systems tonight, I'll try doing a restore operation using the .ISOs I just created, burning the files I uploaded onto CD-R and see what happens.

So I finally found one of my X31 systems and attempted to do a full recovery. Procedure appears to go correctly up until the sixth disk is loaded and a request to reboot the system is executed. The system then asks for a Supplemental disk, which I do not have so I click on "No", then the recovery operation asks for the FIRST disk again. When I load it, I get an error pop-up window saying "An internal error has caused this process to fail.".

Not sure what's gone wrong but I will continue to look into this problem. I believe that I had used this set to recover my other X31 system. Worst case: I'll see if I can order a genuine set from IBM in the morning (or January 2nd).

edit: Well, as I feared, IBM/Lenovo do not offer a recovery disk set for this X31 any more. Tried the 1-800-IBM-SERV number first, was told by IBM Support that Lenovo would handle it, got transferred to them and they couldn't help. Since it originally had Windows XP on it, and support has been withdrawn on the OS, they don't have anything that they can sell me. The agent suggested contacting Microsoft for a (retail) copy but I'm not going to go down that road. So, sorry, the set I posted probably will not work for you.

Thanks for the update, I have just spent a few hours running through it and then came here to see if I was doing something wrong :D. Well seems I will have go with a basic install of XP to get this machine running again,

Sorry for wasting your time. I verified the disk drive and memory in my X31 but still am running into the "load disk 1" problem.

If/when you get the retail copy of Windows XP installed, come back here and click on the Drivers link at the top of any page, navigate to the X31 and download what you need.

Resolved it through the septup.ini oem update to the iso and a repair install.
