Windows 98 on X41

#1 Post by chen_xin_ming » Tue Dec 31, 2019 2:46 am

Has anyone here tried to install Windows 98 on X41? I want to do that mostly because I need to sync a vintage PDA through Parallel port, and X41 is the only machine I have that has Parallel.

I had made a good amount of progress, the process is documented on my blog:
https://www.cloudcube.info/2019/12/31/h ... nkpad-x41/

Most of the things work. The only problems is the on-board USB and AC'97 don't work. I wonder if anyone has any solution...

Update(2020-09-29). I actually got the onboard USB and AC-97 sound working. Now most of the X41 hardware are working under Windows 98! Please check the above link for the steps.

seems like you had a problem similar to how i had issues installing 98SE on my R40, actually it looks almost identical when it comes to that.

my permanent 'fix' was to install several hotfixes that were inside a service pack, i think it was an unofficial service pack for 98SE. whatever it did, it solved all of my problems except for the USB part. that required nusb.exe or something similar, can't remember it that well.
send me a PM if you need something added or changed in the ThinkWiki, i might not be active all the time so please be patient

I would avoid installing the full "unofficial service pack", as it can actually cause more problems and is essentially impossible to remove later.

A better approach is installing some specific things that might be needed, starting from nusb.

I've uploaded the drivers to my blog (link in the original post). Hope it helps.

I'm getting only a black screen after prompting
cd WIN98SE
setup /is
Can someone help with this?

UPD:
Nailed it. But in other way: Made W98 image from 560z via acronis and restored it on X41 drive. Works fine.

Glad it worked for you. Do you mind telling me how you fixed that? I could update my guide accordingly.

Just pulled hdd from 560Z with win98 and made a backup image in Acronis True Image via usb-ide44 conroller (I have the Agestar SATA/IDE/IDE44 to usb adapter). Then restored this backup image on X41's hdd. That's all. I didn't play with it to much, since a few weeks after got the X31 with "native" win98 support that runs perfectly.
