Been trying to find a graphics driver for Windows XP that will work on my X41, nothing's been working

Hello, I'm a newbie with ThinkPads and don't have too much experience with them, so if you guys here know what my problem is, that would really help.

I bought an X41 (non-tablet) off of eBay a while ago and have been loving it, so I decided to mess around with it by seeing if some Linux distros worked, and even some BSDs. But I decided to install XP again, and I was successfully able to install all the drivers I need besides for the video driver. I tried the one on this site: didn't work. I tried ones made for newer versions of Windows: didn't work. I even tried ones from different manufacturers: didn't work. Most of the errors were ones relating to "This software doesn't meet the minimum system requirements". (Letting you know, most of the drivers I was trying to install were ones from around the same time the X41 came out, so they definitely did support them, could have been because of the drivers being from different manufacturers). The main ThinkPad driver though said that "some files were missing or corrupted" though. I also tried installing the monitor ".inf" file, and Windows XP didn't want to install it, saying it "does not contain information of my hardware".

My X41 is also completely stock. But I did install Windows XP with SP3 with the one from archive.org, so maybe that's the issue, or it could have been because I installed it from USB using WinSetupFromUSB, but I seriously don't know. If people here know what to do with these kinds of issues, some help would make me happy.

Stock X41 with Windows XP? There is no reason why the driver on this site should not work. What is the exact error you are getting?

It's a "one or more files seems to be corrupted error".

OK, I see I'm now getting the same problem with this file. Maybe it's corrupt. Let me search for another source.

Edit: OK, the official download from Lenovo, which is a different version, gives the same error, so I suppose it's not a locally corrupt file issue.

Try manually installing the driver, by selecting "update driver" in the Device Manager, then pointing it to the \DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY\WIN2000 folder (or wherever you had it unpacked).

We're getting somewhere, but now, it says the driver can not start. It does register in Windows though.

If you go into BIOS, what are the first 7 characters of the "System-Unit serial number"?

That's an X40, not an X41...

oh, well on the shell of my ThinkPad, it says X41. Odd.

I suspected it might not be a 'real' X41, hence my BIOS question.
It's easy enough to put an X41 clear plate on an X40, to make you think you have an X41...

Yes, or possibly the display+lid have been replaced at one point. These are 20+ year old systems after all.
