Boot From a USB Drive on a X30

#1 Post by lkei » Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:38 am

I have an X30 which I love, but without docking nor USB optical drive, installing an OS had been rather complicated. I finally resorted to a kind of dirty trick, puttting the X30 hd into my T41p, installing Ubuntu there, then swapping back into the X30. Worked, but not without some strange behaviour at boot (blinking splash screen).
I stumbled upon a very nice workaround I had to share here, since my search for it on the forum returned nothing. You need to have access to an USB floppy drive. There's a little soft called PLoP that you can write on a floppy, and will provide you with a new boot devices list on boot up, including USB. So PLoP allows you to boot from a USB key. I tried several Linux distros with Unetbootin. Works really swell!

Thanks for that. I've downloaded and made a floppy disk 'just in case' I ever need it as I have an IBM USB floppy. However I have several X3 UltraBases so am unlikely to need it for any of my X3x machines.

Still, I've found that you can never have too many tools.

Cheers,
Shaun.
