x 31 failed start up

After 2 months non use, with good battery (checked with another good battery), on start the whirring noise speed steps up and contiues. screen blank. no output to external vdu. the indicator lamp right hand one, circle with a Z in it stays on, whirring contiues - blank screen dead keyboard. Comments welcom on cause of aparrent fatality. I changed out the motherbaord 6 months ago and it has been running well. I have another simiilar machine and swapped hard disks that did not solve it. I'm going to assume that you do in fact mean this post as one for an "X31" vs. "X301" with a missing "0" so I'm going to move it to the correct forum for that so hopefully you'll get some responses.

Having the same problem. Originally thought it might be the CMOS battery. But after further reading, it seems to be the video card (hence no display). My guess is that the gpu needs to be reballed, or the motherboard replaced. I will try to replace the CMOS battery, since it too was probably running low by now. But i doubt that it's the main problem here.

At any rate, i'm missing my favorite typewriter
