how to map volume buttons to system volume? x40

i have an x40 and i recenetly bought a usb speaker. i want to be able to use the volume button to control the system volume which directly controls the usb speaker volume.

Don't know about mapping the volume buttons (I believe in pre-*61 series they directly go to the embedded controller), but the Keyboard Customizer Utilitywill allow you to map key combinations to Windows volume control.

There are instructions on Thinkwiki on how to get these things to work on Linux, and they mention that it is, in fact, possible to somehow connect the keys to the software mixer.
