X31: Mixing PC2100 and PC2700??

#1 Post by Chaoz » Thu Apr 14, 2005 8:31 am

Hello All,

I'm a new UK user here and just love the site! I hope to prove myself to be a welcome addition in the future. I've already made use of the buy and sell boards!!

For now, could I ask the pros among you whether it's okay for me to mix the PC2100 with a PC2700 memory model on the X31? I was given a 256Mb PC2100 memory module recently, but when I opened up the X31, I found that the original installed memory was a 256Mb PC2700!

In my disappointment, I decided to install it anyway. I don't notice any major performance setbacks, but not much improvement either.

Is this something that is all right to do? Is it more likely to slow down or improve the performance on my X31??

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The X31 is limited to PC2100 speed. PC2700 works at PC2100 speed, and is often cheaper than PC2100.

It's very OK to mix them in your X31.

Thanks Whizkid! I'm just curious though. Why would IBM put in a PC2700 memory module if the mainboard only supports PC2100??

Uhm... because it's often cheaper.

Ohhhhh, missed that part of your earlier message, whizkid. Too much coffee!

I've been browsing these forums and someone said that newer X31s actually support PC2700. Is there any truth in that?

"Support" meaning they can use it and the newer machines come with it, but it only runs at PC2100 speed. "256 or 512MB std / 2GB max / PC2700 333MHz DDR1 (memory controller limits memory speed to 266MHz)"

@ stock speeds the x31 won't handle more than 266MHz, I know this because I have DDR400 inside my x31. The SPD only has 333 and 400MHz listed but that doesn't have no influence as far as I can tell. Hence, 266 is just fine. 533MHz too, but it's a waste of money ;)

On the other hand, if you chose to mess(overclock) [with] your notbebook(which I bet you won't) you may find out the 266MHz module is not your best friend.
