x22 does not boot from USB, even though BIOS has it enabled

#1 Post by zodiac » Fri Mar 30, 2012 8:22 pm

Hello everyone,

I've been trying all day long to install Windows XP onto my X22 from a USB stick.

The machine wont boot up the Windows installation. All I get is a "Operating System missing".

This is strange, because:
1) The BIOS has the option to boot from USB
2) The BIOS even shows my sticks in the boot devices list
3) I've tried making several sticks bootable with at least 2 different tools and in 4 different ways
4) Every single way worked for my X60s

Am I missing something here? Shouldn't it be working?

Cheers,
Martin

Don't know if you've done this yet, but it might be an interesting experiment to try booting a Linux distro from USB. That way you could determine if the X22 is going to boot from USB at all or not, or if your trouble is the
USB XP install.

In the past I've tried creating a USB XP install, and made it work once with an X31, but don't remember the method used to create the bootable USB flash drive. But, I've had a lot of trouble making it work since then on other ThinkPads. I currently have an X24 that I never could get to boot from USB at all. Not Linux or anything else when there is a hard disk installed. Now, if I physically removed the hard drive, I can boot Linux from a USB flash drive made with Unetbootin. Put the HDD back in...and the USB drive won't boot. :??:

Booting from USB on these older X2x machines is fairly iffy at best, IMHO.

Some BIOSes cannot boot from USB 2.0 media, they need USB 1.1 media

See this piece: look at the section that talks about BIOS booting limitations. The easiest way to make sure you get this to work might be to look for a USB stick that is less than 1GB.
