O+U+N = Beep on X40?

#1 Post by sdaniels » Mon Apr 18, 2005 10:12 am

Haven't figured this one out yet... if you hold down the O+U+N keys together you get a loud "system/bios" speaker beep. It seems to happend with other key combinations as well. I've disabled the accessibility options, but still no luck. Anyone out there know how to disable this?

Keyboards can only take a certain amount of simultaneous keystrokes. I forget what the limit is, but 3-4 sounds about right. There was a discussion about this over in the General Hardware or T-Series forum a few months back.

Hmm.... my desktop machine doesn't do this, and the number of keys is not consistent... for instance, it won't beep on a+s+d+f but if you add a 'g' it will. If one is a fast typer, this is rather annoying.

Run a search and check the threads. I think it has to do with the port (usb vs. ps2) and where the circuitry lines up. Sorry I can't be of more help...

is there a program that requires you to press and hold the o/u/n keys simultaneously?

alternate question: how fast do you type?

no programs that i've installed... this happens straight out of the box. i'm not a really fast typist, i just notice it most when i type 'sound' and 'country' without lifting my fingers from the keys. as noted in my earlier post, there are other combinations that do the same thing, such as 'a+s+d+f+g' or 't+g+h'. maybe it's the key repeat rate that does it?

nada on the key repeat rate. i tried changing delay and repeat to no avail. the other thing that stinks is when you get the beep, it doesn't print the character that caused the beep. in other words, you don't get the 'n' on o+u+n.

My T40 does this as well , and I have no idea why. I have also observed other T4x and various R series with this peculiar quirk.

Adam,

Thanks for the links! Sounds like I just have to live with it. The 'beep' can indeed be disabled, but the 'n' th character will still not display until you take your fingers off one of the other keys. Kind of lame in my mind, but I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too.
