Internal Micrphone on x41

Dear forum
the internal microphone on my x41 doesn't work. Ive tried all sorts of tweaks within windows (XP) but without joy. I haven't tried an external one yet as I don't have one.
Please can advise - does this mean the internal microphone itself is likely to be faulty.
if that is the case - I have seen some on ebay for sale second hand.
Please does anyone know whether it would be difficult job to replace it .
For that matter does anyone please have the instructions for the job.

The microphone is connected to the motherboard via a plug near the bottom (front) right corner once the keyboard is removed. You can get all of the instructions on how to disassemble Thinkpad laptops from here:

You will need a .PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader (my choice). I'm not exactly sure how the microphone is arranged in the X41 as I've just received my first one a few days ago but if it's like other Thinkpad systems, the microphone is wedged into the keyboard bezel and is easily removed once you unplug it from the motherboard. Before going out to buy a replacement, double check to see if the connector is tightly mated. You should also double-click the volume control icon in Window's System Tray and if the microphone slider is not visible, then click Options/Properties and click the checkbox next to Microphone.
