Unable to boot from usb cd-rom, on X24

#1 Post by Mack » Sat Apr 23, 2005 6:17 pm

Well, one of the reasons I bought my X24 some weeks ago was its ability to boot from any usb cd-rom. However, plugging in my external usb cd-burner from philips, and a bootable disc, it refuses to boot from it. Instead the startup screen when booting is stuck for a long time, and it then continues to boot from the hd. Even if I just want to enter the bios, it takes a long time to load the bios setup screen. Unplugging the usb cd-rom, and everything is fast again.

I have set the boot order in bios, with removable devices and cd-rom before the hd. Also, the usb boot option is enabled. Machine also has the latest bios. I can only conclude that either something is wrong with my machine, or this philips cd-rom I have is incompatible and unable to boot from. Is this really possible? I am really depressed over this.

So should I simply try buy another usb cd-rom? If so, I greatly appreciate if someone could mention one that for sure boots with this machine. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Well, I don't know the solution, but all IBM made USB/PCMCIA CD/DVD-ROMs will definitely work with your X24. Get one from Ebay: http://search.ebay.com/ibm-usb-cd-rom_W ... bQ20cd-rom

Thanks, but I prefer to buy stuff within Sweden where I live. But here all used ibm stuff are rare, and ibm's own prices are ridiculously high.

Ah, it worked now! I figured out that this cd-rom I have very quickly goes into some kind of suspend mode after it has got power. After that, it's not responsive to any boot signals from bios. But if I press f12 really quickly, I can get it too boot before the suspend happens.

I am really happy now! :D

I'm glad you have worked it out. BTW, I usually order things from Ebay US, since most of the sellers also ship to Europe, and even with shipping, I can get things much cheaper than in Europe. And some of the IBM stuffs haven't even reached Europe.

I got happy too quickly... Whatever I try to install, windows or linux, the installation process hangs up, because the cd at some later point suspends. I am going to throw this one out the window! :( :(
