X23 Upgrading 11/b to 11/b/g

#1 Post by jmt » Sun Apr 24, 2005 8:33 am

I have a 2662 EDU X23. I would like to upgrade my internal 11/B to a 11/B/G. I have looked all over the IBM parts site and I have been unable to determine if my X23's Wi-Fi is upgradable

The X23 combines the modem and the 802.11b function on a single MPCI card. I have heard (although I do not know from personal experience) that the BIOS does not check for "approved" MPCI cards. If you replace the MPCI card that came with the system with an 802.11 a/b/g card, you will have to use a PCI card for the modem functionality if you want this. I have used the modem on my X23 only a few times when hotels lacked (or, in the case of a couple of French hotels, charged 18€ for) high speed ethernet connections, so I would assume you could get a cheap modem PC card if you repeced the card in the X23. However, I just disabled the built-in wifi and got a DLink G650 PC card, whcih works fine and doesn't seem to cut the battery life too much.

Thank you for the fast responce. Please let me know if I understand you correctly. I can remove my 11/B-56K modem combo card with either the current IBM 11B/G or 11 A/B/G card. However, if I do I will loose the 56k modem.

Most wifi cards are combo cards and contain both 802.11b and a 56k modem.

I'm going to be posting some pictures and suggestions of the success I've had upgrading an X20 to include integrated wifi.
X62 SXGA+ i7 5600u
Carbon X1 i5 UHD
W520 quad-i7
X131e AMD
Sony Vaio P799 (8" LED 1600x768)
"Think" Ultrabook i7

in storage:
X61T Touch L7500
