Where X30 Specs?... and Odds & Ends

#1 Post by kevinc » Sun Apr 24, 2005 5:59 pm

The IBM Refurb site has an X30 w/Media Slice for about $830. I might be interested but I where can I find the fiull specs? The TABOOK listing I've found doesn't have anything prior to the X31. Am I looking in the right place?
What am I giving up with an X30? USB2, Firewire, faster processor...? By the time I add more memory, extended warranty and a wireless card the price is up to about $1,000. It may pay to look for an X31 or 32.
Any suggestions?
Where can I get current info ion the X32? Many posters are purchasing models I can't find in my list from TABOOK, which only has 4 models in the 2884 series.
Also, one poster mentioned a American Express and Master Card discounts. Do they pop up during the ordering process or do you need to order from specific sites?
Thanks

Item #1 in the FAQ. Hint: The W stands for "withdrawn".

I've used an X31 at work and I own a X30. I cannot really tell the difference in speed (exact specs on both machines except for the graphics and processor) although the X31 is a Centrino and the X30 is a Pentium 3M. The X30 does include firewire. It also only has USB 1.1 ports but so does the X31. I actually find the graphic card more stable on the X30 (less crashes when running graphic intense games) compared to the X31.

Is there any big risk buying Refurbs in general...if they are in the factory packaging etc.? I notice a lot of ebay auctions by thinkpadworld that are for "factory sealed IBM recertifed" units. Is this the same thing as a refurb. A lot of these come with 1 year onsite warrienties and 3 year Mack Computer Extended (worldwide) warranties...that a "normal" IBM warranty package?

yes, it is essentially the same thing. 4 year warrantee is pretty good, depending on the price. Buying a refurb is essentially a lottery, either you get a "almost-new" one, or one that has been slightly abused...scratches maybe?

Doesn't the X31 have a USB 2 port?

The one I definately had didn't have USB 2, since I had to use a USB2 PC card to fully utilize my USB HD. It was one of the first X31s to be released, so maybe that might be the reason.

The remaining X31s that I can find on the ibm.com site list USB 2.

ALL X31s have USB2.0 ports, from the first one released to the most recent.

If your port ran at USB1.1 vs. USB2.0 it was a Windows problem and is common to a lot of laptops.

This has been widely discussed at length in the MS XP forums.

The machine actually came with Windows 2000, and it was assigned to me in Jan 2003 while I was working at IBM. It might be the case that IBM lab technician imaged it with the wrong IBM corporate image since it was the first shipment of X31s that the lab had received.
