Success installing IPS LCD in X32

#1 Post by Bibin » Thu Sep 20, 2012 3:09 am

I've heard of this done, but couldn't find any good detailed writeups for it, so I did one of my own.

Nice viewing angles with some arts I made:

I typed it all up from my trusty X32!

Interesting mod, and nice solution to swap the LCD-frames themselves, rather than mess with Xacto knives, Dremels and what have you.
I wonder why some screens have their LCD-cable connector 180 degrees reversed...
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

A very nice mod to a very nice laptop. I purchased a similarly modded X32 from a forum member here. He ran into the same problems (reversed connector pinout and incompatible frame). His solutions were simpler: for the cable - just bend it and trim the connector so that it fits backwards. For the frame - clip the mounting tabs and just ignore the screws - the frame is not screwed to the side bezel, only to the front bezel. It's far less work and less risk of damaging something, but may not be as durable in the long term. For starts, I've been running into problems of the ZIF connector coming loose from the panel, and eventually applied industrial-grade glue to it to keep it permanently in place. Short of the cable breaking - there is no way it is coming loose now, but then the cable might break eventually from the stress.

That is what I did to test the LCD, but having the bend in the ZIF cable is very awkward within the top frame. A small in-line adapter would be ideal, but I do not know of a place to get such a thing.

Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread, but I wanted to ask around whether that mentioned webpage is still available somewhere? The link is unfortunately dead now. It's frustrating, as I remember that about 1 -1.5 years ago I could still open that page. I should have downloaded it for future, looks like things are not permanent on the web.

Any chance someone has that page saved on their hard drive?
