Showing Off-X41 Tablet with SSD[IMG]

#1 Post by houndkr » Wed Sep 26, 2012 11:41 am

I've been owning this X41t Tablet for a little almost an year now... I'm trying to upgrade it to make it become the best it could be...
a few months ago I have installed an SSD. It's made by a Korean company, and is a 1.8inch, PATA(IDE) SSD. Quite unusual for an SSD that's released in 2012.
It's because it's actually made specifically for X40/41. It does work in other models, though.

I saw some dramatic improvements in terms of performance and I wanted to show off.
But I didn't have the tools for it. Now that I have equipments to take photos and videos, I am uploading it :)

It came in a very simple box. No manual, nothing. I don't think it really matters because it's meant for people who already know what they want to do with this thing.

Image

This is how it looks like. Again, very simple packaging.
When held with hand, it was noticably lighter than stock Hitachi HDD, though I don't think it will contribute so much to the overall weight of the laptop.

At the back, you have that classic jumper dialogue :)

So, here comes the numbers :)

Image

This is the benchmark from the manufacturer. It's in it's clean state, so it won't work this fast when you are using it with OS installed as a primary boot disk.

Image

This is my benchmark result. My X41T is now running a clean version of Windows 7 Professional. I use windows 7 because of native tablet functions provided by Windows 7, but it was virtually unusable with HDD. Now with SSD, it's actually as fast as many modern laptops with HDDs. IE 9, MS Word, OneNote... they all come up as if they were waiting before I clicked on them.
No major modification had been done to the OS: just some routine SSD optimization... Superfetch off, hibernation off(for more disk space), page file off(for the same reason). I did install a modded BIOS to bypass Error 2010.

Image

Now, this is the Hitachi 1.8" IDE HDD 4200RPM.... The numbers...they're just....just not right....

Image

And WEI for the X41T.
My X41T has P M 1.6GHz(Dothan), and 2.5GB physical RAM(2.0GB usable). Disk drive point scores 5.9. I suspect it's the best you can get with PATA interface...

To see exactly how faster it is... just check out the vids. Really, it's Gangnam Style XD

Did you enjoy this freaking speed? Just wanted to show you guys such things exist.

Lol. Yeah, that's pretty impressive. Although-Windows 7 on an X41... with a 4200RPM HD? That's almost unusable in my book. Hopefully you did it for benchmarking purposes.

An SSD is almost necessary for Windows 7 on computers this old to boot up in any decent time. At least, to make it comparable to a netbook. But X41s are pretty much classics at this point anyway, so whatevs.

I'm trying to see if I can incorporate... somewhat of the same principal with CF cards and an adapter to plug it in as a IDE HD. I'm not confident it'll have anywhere near the same results as a legitimate SSD, like what you have, but it's worth a try... eh?
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

and yes. I am a bit of a lunatic.

Why did you blur the brand of the SSD?

That logo looks new to me. Hopefully it's not a rebranded Kingspec :D My X41T has a similar setup as yours (Mach Xtreme SSD and 2GB usable RAM) and I feel Win7 works really nice.

Enjoy your tablet!

Actually, I used Win7 with my HDD as well. I really like how tablet features are incorporated into Windows 7. Like I said, however, it was virtually unusable, so it is also true that I just rarely used it when it had an HDD.
After installing this SSD, I use it quite often, especially when I'm writing something.

Just in case ;)
And no, it's not a rebranded Kingspec. It works much better; faster, and has embedded garbage collection(sth like trim), so it won't get slow even under Windows XP environment.

There you go:

Sequential Read: 120 MB/s
Sequential Write: 55 MB/s

The specs look very similar to Super Talent's DuraDrive ZT2, which I am using in my X41 tablet. Perhaps they share the same controller.

Yeah, that's the one.
They had a revision on their lineup. The newer ones are way faster. Didn't have the chance to test them, though...

Actually it's a little bit expensive for an SSD of that capacity and speed. A price range you would pay only if you really want to use that specific legacy model laptops...
I paid...somewhat around 150USD for 64GB.
Garbage collection is, in easy words, embedded trim function. That means you don't need to manually use trim command, even in XP, which makes it virtually maintenance-free.
It automaically does trim in controller-level, so it doesn't have that gradual slow-down and freezing when using an SSD in older OS. At least that's what the developer said when I met him in person.
