Installing a wifi card in the X40

#1 Post by catback » Tue Oct 02, 2012 1:15 pm

My X40 currently has an Intel wifi card installed (FRU# 91P7267). The label on it lists it as 802.11b. Will I be able to connect to 802.11g signals with an updated driver or will the entire card need to be replaced to do this? I plan on running either Windows 7 or XP.

If I need a new card, can anyone recommend one that is plug and play that Windows will automatically install drivers for and that won't give me an incompatible network card error message when I boot up? A model# or FRU# for the card would be helpful.

Thanks.

You'll have to change the card itself.

Any Intel 2200BG/2915ABG with a FRU # will work fine, as will their IBM/Atheros counterparts.

Running W7 on a X40 will not be an enjoyable experience. Stick with XP.

There are hundreds of FRUs out there.

> will my class b card work on a class g network?

yes. Class g is really b/g--same freqs, just different speed limits. At my house,
the signal comes over the same cable as TV, and I find class b cards
virtually the same speed as class g or (even) class n. The bandwith bottleneck
isn't the card in the laptop--it's the service provider.

perhaps if you're connected to a faster router somewhere, you would notice
the difference.

class a, that was the first, is as fast as g but uses a different freq that fails to
penetrate walls so well.
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

Not necessarily. Everything depends on router settings. If the setup is configured to ignore the "b" cards, connection will not be established.
