external LCD for x41

#1 Post by lanes » Fri Apr 29, 2005 2:06 am

I am getting an X41 in a little while, I am also getting an external LCD. I have not bought the LCD yet.

Since the x41 only has an analog port I am not sure what display to buy... I want to get a high quality display, but I'm not sure the analog port will keep up with the display...? I hope you understand my question, I am a bit unsure how to explain it..

For the price, I have not found a better deal the the Samsung LCD's...yep I know there are better ones out there...but so far I have been very happy with the Samsungs. I have 4 712n's and 2 912n's...one of the 712n's was used as an external display for a Dell Axim X50v (vga pda) and worked perfectly...the Axim does have a 16mb video card in it but I can't imagine it would be anywhere close to the onboard video in the X41. In my desktop config I run 3 712n's and a 27" TV LCD off of 2 video cards and am very happy with how they perform.

I think I only paid $279 after rebates for the 712n's and $379 for the 912n's...I would add tho that while I am not a big gamer the 912n's were dramitically worse with games (i.e Doom3) but you can't really run them very well on the X41 anyway.

That's the plot! I am not sure how much money I should put into an LCD...I'm afraid I will get the same performance from a $1000 LCD as I would from a $100 LCD when using the x41...

My money is on no noticeable performance improvement running off the X41...keeping in mind that the 2 main "stats" to consider when picking an LCD are resolution and refresh time (although contrast ratio and brightness are also improtant...brightness of at least 500/cdm and contrast of at least 800:1 should be mininum). Refresh time is primarily only an issue with game play and to some degree DVD / movie watching. For games, 12ms is preferred....for DVD's etc. anything under 25ms is generally acceptable. My 17" Samsungs have a 17ms refresh time versus 25ms on the 19's (I think)...games look quite poor on the 19's by comparison. DVD's are fine on either tho.

One thing you might consider, especially if this is your only large monitor is getting something like the HP 2335 (23" widescreen ) or the current rage...the Dell 2405 FPW (24" widescreen...currently on sale for $1049 I think) because they provide additional inputs for an HD cable box, DVD player (stand alone), Tivo etc. This would allow you to run say your X41 display along with HD movie, ballgame etc. in a PiP window :) Either of these monitors will run at up to 1900 x 1200 and I think allow for both a DVI and VGA connection...meaning you could run it with two computers using either split screen or PiP (with a cable box on compenent )...not 100% sure about this however. I also am not certain what they would look like taking a feed at 1024 x 768...I presume ok but you should confirm if this was an attractive option.

lol! The Dell 2405 FPW would be nice! I live in Norway, thus this LCD is a lot more expensive than $1000 (more like $1500)...

I am not sure I understand what you mean regarding the performance... Is there a noticable difference between VGA and DVI?

Get Bill to buy it, do a pixel check and relay it to you :) Actually, it is on sale here for $1019 right now. The 20" widescreen is on sale for $550ish but there have been quite a few people complaining of light bleed on that one.

Some people can tell the difference in terms of PQ...I personally can't. I have my 27" LCD TV running off my main desktop via VGA (I use the DVI connection for a HD cable box) and can't tell the difference either with my Windows desktop or playing DVD's. Actually, to me DVI looks worse for HD cable feeds then component...although on many A/V boards that comment would get me hung! I am no expert...just based on my own viewing I think either DVI or VGA is fine for everything I do.

I should add...I don't know for sure if Bill would provide this service although I thought I saw him offer in another thread. Worth checking out that as he would be very reliable.

lol :) I thought you were kidding...

I got family in the US, so I can get them to purchase it for me (that's how I am going to get my x41). It is however a easier to ship a tiny laptop rather than a 24" LCD!
