X41 Tablet as Coding Laptop?

#1 Post by ATXChris » Sat Dec 01, 2012 12:23 am

Hello guys! I have a question for you experienced users; I am hearing of X41 tablet/laptop hybrids as being "slow" and unfit for general use. My question is thus: Will it be able to handle the following;

1. Play Youtube Videos
2. Run Computer Programming IDE's (Eclipse)
3. Be used as a note taking computer for college

Smoothly? If it makes any difference, I intend to put some flavor of Linux on it.

Specifically I am looking at this one:

Cosmetic condition does matter to me in this particular case and I think this one looks pretty good. My question is will this laptop be suitable for my purposes for it? Is the price pretty fair? I won't lie, I am willing to pay a bit more because A) It has the IBM logo on it and B) It is in good condition.

I know this is a THINKPAD forum, but would I be better off going with this Fujitsu laptop for these purposes?

I have emailed the seller requesting tech specs but haven't heard back (it is midnight here :D )

That's an insane amount of money for X41T. With the original snail of the HDD, no less.

You can easily pick a X60 which is far newer machine and will run W7/W8 with no issues at that price.

Fujitsus have a pretty good reputation, but I've never used one for an extended period of time. Someone else might chime in on that aspect of the question...

Okay I found out the Fujitsu's model number: T4215
CNET gives it a good review and for $100 it seems killer. Might be able to talk 'em down to $80.

*edit* $80 it is :D Just needs a new battery but I don't mind.

I got my X61T for less... Haven't used Fujitsus, but if you can find an HP TC4400 you won't regret it. Graphics card is a GMA950 like on the X60, but the motherboard's CPU is socketed and you can go as fast as a Core2 T7400 2.16Ghz - similar performance to an X200! The Fujitsu is also very close to that - if you can really find it for 80$ it's a bargain.

I assume it has a 12" XGA.

If so eclipse will be barely OK, a bit of a pain as you'll have to switch tabs more often to view info, but definitely usable.

You'll need 2GB of RAM though, 1GB isn't really enough.

Eclipse on an XGA display grates on you. I used my X61 at the office a few years ago in Eclipse all day and it was a pain. You'll be double clicking the source view constantly to maximize and minimize it... Otherwise a nearly useless amount of code is visible for all of the other views, palettes and menu real estate consumed. I'd look for something with higher resolution personally...
