Is 720p or 1080p playback possible on the X40?

#1 Post by SailingAway » Mon Dec 17, 2012 3:11 pm

Have a feeling the answer is a no but I wanted to see if anyone has gotten either 720p or 1080p video files to play on the X40. These are for local files, not streaming through the internet. If you have, please list the codecs you have installed and the media player you're using. Thanks.

Most of 720p should be playable. Most of 1080p probably won't be.

You can try one of the players with the built-in codecs, such as VLC (VideoLAN) or MPC-HC (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema). I've been using the K-Lite Codec Pack for a while on many computers and it generally performs OK.

If you buy USB->miniPCIe adapter then you can use Broadcom Crystal HD decoder card and HD content is playable, 1080p included.

Though you have to buy miniPCIe one, NOT mSATA or USB one (which is used to test WWAN cards).

This looks like a correct one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271117702852?ss ... 1423.l2661

Raceboy,

That's not the correct one.
The item you linked to only works with the proprietary SSDs that come with a some models of Asus EEE PC netbooks.

I don't think a device that provides a fully-capable mini PCIe slot via a USB connection exists.

Low-bitrate 720p H.264 videos might be playable on a Pentium M 1.6GHz. If you have a fast desktop, you could try re-encoding and downscaling videos to 540p.

1080p is out of the question. You need either a Core 2 Dup processor 1.8GHz+ or a decoder card like the Broadcom CrystalHD. However, the CrystalHD is a mini PCIe card, and the X40 doesn't have any mini PCIe slots.

Thing is that Asus eeePC SSD-s are in fact pcie devices, not msata or usb devices. I am not claiming this will work but looking at the PCB it has connections in the correct places. For 25$ I might buy it and test it but it won't happen this year.

The Asus EEE SSDs use a non-standard pinout on their "mini-PCIe" SSDs. http://beta.ivc.no/wiki/index.php/Eee_P ... ansion_Bay They put an IDE interface for the 701 series, and added a SATA interface for the 900/901 series. This alone would prevent true mini-PCIe cards from working in the adapter you specified.
