#1 Post by kuerten » Mon May 02, 2005 1:58 pm

I am gonna upgrade my hard drive now,I am considering the WD scorpio 800ve which is 80G,5400 8M
is it good for the X31 considering the performance, silence and vibration?

Unless it is much cheaper than the 5k80, I don't see why you shouldn't go for the Hitachi. It is proven to be reliable, silent, speedy and is the "official" Thinkpad drive. Can't go wrong with that!

Same boat here - there's a pretty comprehensive test report here - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storag ... orpio.html
Looking pretty good, but no discussion of noise/heat/vibration. I was going to go with the 5K100 80gb but it's nowhere to be found in France...The scorpio is available though.

Looking at the products specs on the Fujitsu MHV2080AH, the MHT2080AH, the Seagate MOmentus 80G-5400RPM and the WD Scorpio, and paying particualr attention to the "idle sound levels, you will find that the 21dB rating of the WD rocks compared to the louder 26dB - 28dB offerings from the other dudes...

FWIW.

Really? Thanks for looking that up, well that seals the deal for me, I was going to pick one up today, I'll report back here once it's in my X31.

I'm getting my WD800VE in today from UPS for my X31. I got it for its silence too. If you get a clicking noise, there is a firmware update for it....

Thanks, but I returned it a long time ago, humming on a 7200 Hitachi now ;-)

LOL. I saw your post was May 5, and thought it was a new post, but I didn't notice the 2005! I had the Hitachi 7200 drive (7k60), but the noise at idle annoyed me too much. The Hitachi is 29db at idle, whereas the WD800VE is at 21db idle.

The drive I've been using is an old 4200 drive, which is the quietest drive known on the market, is 16db (can't hear it unless you put your ear up against the laptop where the drive is). But it's SLOW (4200RPM).

I can hear the 21db wd800ve from about 3 feet away as a quiet hum. I could hear the 7k60 Hitachi from the next room. My place is very quiet otherwise...no fans, etc., on any computers. If X31 fan comes on (rare with NHC running), the fan noise is way louder than the 7k60's.

Yep the 7K60 was a pain, the 7K100 is better, still get some clicking though, but that's Google Desktop indexing so I don't think much can be done about that.

The WD800VE 21 db noise was getting on my nerves a bit, since I'm used to absolute silence. I put a pillow on the X31 (I'm using a dock), and I get that great sound of silence once more. Now I only need to worry about the heat.
