I bought my X40 a couple months ago. Yesterday, I turned it on and some error message about the USB ports came up. Since then, my USB ports have stopped responding to whatever devices I plugged in (there is still power coming out since the light in my optical mouse is still shining). Moreover, the audio system in the computer has ceased to exist (when I click on the 'sound, audio devices' icon in the control panel, it's telling me no audio device is installed). Moreover, the battery is draining about 1.5 times faster then it did before.
I called tech support and they just kept telling me to update my BIOS. I also tried to restore the system to factory content but that didn't help either. Does anyone know if there are other things that I can try? I would hate to send it back since I do all my work on it and I am pretty much crippled without a laptop.
I need help! USB ports died, no audio system
ugh - I would think that when USB ports fail, it's undoubtedly a system board issue. It sounds as if it might need to be replaced. Just backup all your data first.
Yes, it'll hurt being without your primary machine, yes, but having gone through it before with my old R32, it can be kind of liberating to *not* to have a computer for a few days...
Keep us posted on what happens.

Hey guys. Had the exact problem happend to me...TWICE!
First time, USB and Audio. MB replaced under warranty.
Second time, just USB ports.
Can't believe that IBM hasn't addressed this.
Just got the ticket from Siemen's to do the replacement on the second one, so thought I would search the web to see if anyone else is having problems, and sure enough!
Has anyone heard directly from IBM?
Here is the other post I was reading/replied to:
