Ethernet Drivers not working after clean XP install

#1 Post by DCAJR » Sun Mar 17, 2013 3:01 pm

Hi,
I formatted and installed a new version of XP Now that it's installed on my x40 thinkpad, it looks like it was a dell version of XP. Anyway, now I can't install downloaded drivers for the ethernet which isn't working... Yellow ?'s for:
Base System Device
Base System Device
Ethernet Controller
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
PCI Device
PCI Modem
SM Bus Controller
Unknown Device
Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

Base System and Ethernet are listed twice.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Looks like you are missing several drivers, which is normal with a fresh install of Windows on an X40. And, you are correct in thinking that the ethernet driver is the first thing to install, because then you will be able to download and install whatever else you need right on the X40.

So, first download this driver on a different computer, and using a USB flash drive or similar, transfer the downloaded file to the X40. Follow these instructions carefully, and you should be good to go.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Thanks for the welcome and quick response Neil. I actually did what you recommended prior to my first post. I've install that same driver in numerous locations and then tried to reinstall it through the device manager with no success. It can't find the download... I've tried installing it packed and unpacked with no success. Any ideas??

If the new hardware wizard doesn't automatically find the driver, just manually direct it to the folder (I don't remember it's name right now) that contains the un-zipped driver (not the downloaded package) and let it install.

I can't remember if there is a "setup" wizard included in the driver package, or not. But, look in the folder that contains the drivers, and if there is a "setup" icon there, double click it, and run setup from there instead of device manager.

Thanks again Neil. worked like a charm. Now I just have to figure out the rest. Do you know if there is something I can download that loads all the old drivers? Otherwise, it's one by one. next I'll work on the wireless and go through my list. Thanks again for your excellent directions.

There is System Update for automatic driver installation. Just be sure to carefully read the installation guide, and software requirements before attempting to use. But if you have the time, installing drivers one at a time is a better learning experience, and will result in less "bloat" left behind.

Understand and agreed.. One at a time it is. I'll let you know how I make out later this week.
