Question about wiping everything clean

#1 Post by pat » Thu Jun 17, 2004 7:34 pm

If I were to combine both the Predesktop area & my regular partition and wiped everything out, would I have a problem downloading ALL of the drivers/tools back from IBM? Or would I have to backup some stuff like C:\IBMTOOLS, etc

thanks

Yes. Burn the \IBMTools directory. Licensed items like DLA and InterVideo, etc are not kept on the IBM download site as full versions (only as upgrades that first detect if you have the original somewhere on your drives... you don't even need to have them installed, just somewhere) Also, there have been missing chipset management drivers before... so play it safe and burn that directory off first.

Even if you have the Recovery Disks this is a good idea because you can't pull individual apps off of the Rec.Disks, only rewipe and reinstall your drive.

do you have a set of recovery cds?   if not, then also back up c:\DRIVERS and c:\I386.

partition magic can combine the two partitions.   it's worth buying if you ever decide in the future to change how your partitions are laid out.   this would save you from having to go through the hassle of a clean installation.

No optical drive, so no Recovery CDs. But I did just win an auction for an external PCMCIA CD-ROM/DVD. How much are the recovery CDs through IBM?

$30 if outside of your first 30 days. Free if within your first 30days
