and my X31 was plugged into my docking station. it wasn't on or anything, just sitting there charging...

could anything have gone wrong? I booted up after on batteries and all seemed fine.

could a surge have gone through the docking station to the laptop?

Chances are, you'll be fine. Your brick AC adaptor would have absorbed any surge (within reason), but best go and get a surge protector for extra protection!
