Just bought X40

#1 Post by elmalloc » Tue May 17, 2005 10:20 pm

Hello all,

Just bought an X40 (whose availability is "CALL" on the website). Anyway, it might be kind of slow (1.1 ghz) but I think I'm happy with it.

It was $1400 for an X40 w/ 1GB RAM, 30 GB HD, 1.1 ghz processor.
Similarly I was comparing it with an X41 w/ 1GB RAM, 40 GB HD and 1.5 ghz processor for $1950 shipped. I am not planning to game on it, just use visual studio, so I think I made a good choice.

My first laptop, and it will be an IBM - can't wait - feel like I got it for a good price too, for an IBM! People actually buy that HP/Compaq stuff at best buy instead of IBM?

I bought an X-40 2371-A9U two weeks ago. It also has the 1.1ghz. It came with only 256 Ram, however I increased it to 768. It's fabulous. I also have a T42 with 1.7ghz and 768 RAM. When I received the X-40 I tested it (speed) against the T42. On the applications that I run, the speed is virtually the same and because the X-40 is so much more mobile (light) I find I use it about 90% of the time. You made an excellent choice and I'm sure you will be very happy with it.

Thanks all, I'm excited! Yes I made a mistake about 1 GB of RAM, I did mean 768. I think it will be fine, I use visual studio on my desktop with 512 RAM and it works well.

I will post pictures when I get it, not that we haven't all seen a thinkpad before anyway though. =)

Owned a 1.2Ghz lv X40.
But really could not get over the (imho) very slow hard disk
They should make an 5400 or 7200 rpm 1.8” hdd (don’t see it happening this year tough)
And put an 128mb vga card in the X series.

Mind you, I don’t like gaming, but on those occasions I do have some time to play I really would be able to play something else then unreal tournament at 30 fps (and low settings)

Anyway, Ill keep my T42 for now, but as soon the faster X series come out ill order them the same day :D

Yes... I love the X-series.

The X40 is definitely a good choice.

I would advise getting an 8-cell battery upgrade; the 4-cell on mine gives me about 2hr 45min using dimmest screen setting. Borrowed my friend's 8-cell and it went up to 7+ hours.

Thanks. Does the 8 cell stick out at the back?

I didn't go X41 because I heard the battery life was weaker and the unit got hotter due to the slightly faster chip...and the price tag was about $500 more.

The 8-cell does stick out in the back but not by much. I'd say something like 1'' or so? Personally I still think the X40 keeps its small form factor even with the 8-cell. I'd sacrifice a little room in the back to stay unplugged longer.

Congrats on the new purchases (including LordGop!). The X40 is an amazing machine, especially if you need something that is incredibly portable but powerful enough to handle most applications (save for the cool 3D games that always taunt me when I'm in my local computer store!)

Am curious: as per my post here http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=10722, I am wondering if any of you are experiencing a similar 'problem'?
