ThinkPad X41 - Windows 98Se video driver needed

#1 Post by Oman Longking » Mon Dec 01, 2014 6:36 pm

Just purchased a used ThinkPad X41. Very nice notebook and came in an excellent condition. It is (nearly) more nice than my X61 ones. Don't understand why there are no new ThinkPads like these X41 and X61.
But this is an other discussion whićh I don't want to start now.

I installed the latest Xubuntu Linux 14.10 on it. Perfect ! Everything running out of the box, as usual there are no additional drivers to be downloaded. Linux runs very nice on this computer.

But the reason I bought the X41 was my need to set up a notebook still running Windows 98SE.
Yes, I know ... ... but it is not joke and it wasn't funny at all to get Win 98 on the hard disk. Took me 2,5 days and all my Linux tools as clonezilla, gparted , ...

OK. Now it is done and Windows 98SE is on the hard disk and even bootable ;-), but I can not find drivers except one for the modem and for the trackball.
The most important one, the video driver for the Mobile Intel 915GM/GSM, 910GML Express Chipset Family (I took this information from my Xubuntu installation) I cannot find even after three days of googleing.

So maybe here is someone which can help. Please !

Please don't advise to install a newer Windows version or a virtual machine. This isn't the solution in this case.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

As the X41 did not ship from the factory with Windows 98, you won't find the 915GM drivers on our X41 software/driver page either. From what I can tell, Intel 900 series graphic chips require Windows 2000 or XP. If you want to run W98 on an X-series Thinkpad, you probably have to go back earlier than the X40 to something like the X31 (ATI Mobility Radeon), X30 (Intel 830MG) or X2x series (various ATI Rage chips). As far as I can tell, the X21 is the last system to be offered with W98 from the factory.

Yeah maybe was a mistake to buy such a "brand new" ThinkPad to use Win 98. But you know one thing, I haven't used Windows (in virtual machines only) since years so I wasn't aware of such stupid driver issues since the newest Xubuntu Linux 14.10 runs perfect on this notebook. It is a shame !

Still can't believe that there is not any driver for this Mobile Intel 915GM/GSM, 910GML Chipset. Maybe a driver from HP, Toschiba or some else might run. Or a standard driver for this chipset. Maybe I just could use the inf files of Windows 2000 ?

Nobody has an idea ? Help very much appreciated !

OK. Chipset Driver Version 6.1.0.1008 (!) for Windows 2000 / XP from the Lenovo Driver page works fine for Win 98SE.
Now I still need the video driver. Will try the Windows 2000 version ;-)
