Just got my new X40!

#1 Post by akao » Tue May 31, 2005 7:55 pm

I ordered it just over a week ago, and I got it today. Woo!! The laptop is way light. The jury is still out about its performance (the slow hard drive is definitely noticeable during high I/O activities). I had some initial reservations about the lack of a touchpad, but I'm finding the stick just fine.

Has anyone tried to use the whole security chip? Is it useful? Worth the trouble?

Congrats! What are the specs of your machine?

I looked into the security chip, but decided against it. I don't keep anything ultra-sensitive on my machine (just credit card info, passwords, banking details, etc.!) but I did put a power-on and hard disk password on it. Yes, can ultimately be defeated, but...

Enjoy that new machine :)

Specs

#3 Post by akao » Tue May 31, 2005 9:57 pm

Here's the Specs:

Model: X40 2386
Pentium M LV 738 - 1.4 GHz / 2MB L2 / 400 Mhz FSB
256 MB (Popped in another 512MB from the laptop this is replacing)
40 GB
Bluetooth (Must have for me)
Ultrabase
8-Cell Battery
Intel 802.11 b/g

I have to say that the ultrabase seems like a "waste". Aside from the slot for a second drive, there isn't much. It seems like there is a lot of space left over that IBM could've used for other things: another battery, or even a third drive.

My next idea is to get a big SD card ~2GB, and fill it with the most commonly accessed files: maybe outlook and firefox. I'm hoping it will speed up start-up time, and reduce battery usage. Anyone else try this yet?

I hope you like it. I love mine....would never buy a non ultraportable hehe

On mine I see no reason for this...the speed is fine and no way do I see a reason to spend the $ for a 2GB SD card

Of course, I'm loving it! Complaints: none.

None of my previous, "thin and light" laptops come close. I've had two Toshiba portege, and one Sony vx89, ( and a crappy dell, and compaq that I'd rather forget), and this is by far the thinnest and lightest.

What are X40 start up times on:

a) coming out of complete shutdown (heard up to 1 min)?
b) coming out of hibernation?
c) coming out of standby?

Thanks!

P.S. Lets say you have a Word, Explorer and Windows Media Player opened.

Whoa, I just found the new "Software Installer", and a lot of my drivers were out of date. Note to new owners, do not use the IBM Connector Updater. Find and download the Software Installer.

Anyhow, quick tests show:
5 second to get out of standby
15 seconds to get out of hibernate (I have hd password turned on)

I haven't tried bootup, but I think that probably varies a lot depending on what you have installed. For me, that includes Office and OneNote.

A complete startup (before I optimized it) was 3min. 42 seconds. :?
After removing unnecesarry processes and using bootvis, and what not, I achieved 37 seconds. :)

Hiberanation is on par with DELLs Latitude D600m, so I imagine X40 does not lug behind other thinkpads in that respect. So sloweness is experienced only on full restart....

Yep amber for sure and its the right amount to not piss anyone off but enough to make the keyboard nice and visible.

I am going to be interested in the responses you get. I'm thinking aboiut a USB 2.0 DVD burner. My wife's desktop has no burner. Would like to be able to use one both places.

There's two normal USB ports on the laptop itself.
