X41 Fan Noise

#1 Post by DOM » Fri Jun 03, 2005 7:19 pm

OK, I'm on my second X41 now and they both have the same problem. The fan starts to make a loud growling noise when you tilt the laptop. It almost sounds like the fan is rubbing on something. The quicker you tilt the laptop, the louder the noise. The fan is quiet as long as the laptop is stationary. Also, the faster the fan is running, the louder the noise when you tilt it. It has nothing to do with the hard drive because when the fan stops, the noise disappears. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not shaking this thing around, it happens with pretty slow movements like when it's sitting on your lap and you shift position.

Has anyone else noticed this problem with an X41? Do the X40's exhibit the same behavior?

My X-40 does not exhibit the problem you describe. Ocasionaly you can hear the fan (very quiet) but the sound does not change, regardless of weather it's moved or tilted.

My 40 same as jmt. You might want to remove the keyboard and see if you can see anything hindering the fan.

I am having exactly the same problem with my new X41. It is being heard when I move my laptop around.

Hmm... I don't know anything about the X4*, but here's a shot in the dark...

Could the fan be on a rubber shock-absorbing mount (to keep vibration down), but tilting the laptop causes the fan to move ever so slightly (due to inertia), and grind against something?
