7200 RPM HDD in X31 - Great!

#1 Post by verktyg » Sun Jun 05, 2005 3:58 pm

My X31 was a slug. 2885-RGU 1.6Mhz, 1G memory, 40G 5400 RPM HDD.

I got rid of the Disneyland, Jelly Bean, MAC Look crap and streamlined everything I could. It still took over a minute and a half to startup and programs seemed to crawl open - no spyware or any problems like that, it was just a slug!

I made a Ghost image of the original drive and copied it to a Hitachi 7k60 7200 RPM 60G HDD.

WOW! What a difference! It's starts up in 30 seconds and programs fly open!

I didn't unhide the HPA hidden partition so Ghost didn't copy it. I don't know whether that has any effect on the speed but I'm really happy with my X31 now. I've been using an old PIII 500 240x for the past 6 months because it was almost as fast as the X31!

Sounds great! My ThinkPad is pretty slow to boot due to the 4200RPM drive, so I usually put it into hibernation instead of shutdown. Takes about 10-15 seconds to restore the RAM image from the drive, and I'm sure it would be much much faster on the 7200RPM drive.

I'm going to do a fresh install from scratch with the IBM Recovery CDs. I had about 30 hours configuring and installing software the first time around so I haven't been over anxious to get started.
