non-ibm USB cd drives that can boot

#1 Post by mbrship » Sat Jun 11, 2005 12:24 am

Hi All,

New to this forum and glad that i found it!

I just got an X40 and didn't buy the ibm usb cd drive. Would like to know if there're any non-ibm models in the market that can boot up the machine? Especially those low-cost ones?

Thanks in advance.

Karl

If the X40 can boot a flash drive, you SHOULD be good, as long as the CD drive can work on Windows without drivers.
Current: 365XD (120 MHz, 72 MiB, 6.4 GB, 4x CD-ROM, 10.4" TFT)
Past: T61p 15.0" QXGA, T60p 15.0" QXGA, X61 Tablet SXGA+, R51e 14.1" XGA, X21

I have a bootable USB powered CD-rom drive that is IBM branded, but it is manufactured by TEAC. The TEAC model number is CD-210PU.

sometimes you may be able to boot from a drive but this doesn't mean that your system has the drivers for it. I am saying this cause it happened not to be able to install windows from sush a drive. so be careful before you start any advanced things :wink:

I have a Sony USB cd-rw/dvd-rom drive ( MPD-AP20U ) that I have booted from... though not to install windows. Worked just fine for booting into Knoppix & Ubutu liveCD's.

I have the Plextor 716UF USB DVD Writer, and I can boot my X41 off it without any problem.

I have used various USB drives to boot a few X22,X30. Some of them that have worked very well include:

* IOMEGA DVD/CDRW USB 2.0
* Archos Cesar USB 2.0

Linux installs fine. For windows I have installed the factory CD using the drives, but I couldnt install from a non IBM windows XP CD. I think winXP doesnt look for USB devices properly during the install process. I didnt investigate much though.

In general, I think most new USB 2.0 drives would work.
