X20 to X22/23/24 conversion possible?

#1 Post by jeffbaichina » Thu Mar 02, 2017 11:42 pm

Hi all,

Looking at the exterior of X20-24 they seemed identical for all the models, just wondering if it's possible to swap in a X22/23/24 motherboard into a X20? Is it a drop-in replacement? If not, what do I need to swap out together?

I was warned according to http://thinkwiki.de/X22 in the section where it says X22 is a "full internal redesign", but what compatibility did it break specifically?

Eager to swap out the ATI Rage graphics card in the machine for a better one.

Best Regards,

There are a few parts you can swap between the x20-21 and x22-23-24: ram, battery, adapter, wifi, ram plate, hd.

The bulk of the machines can not be swapped: screen, keyboard, motherboard, fan.

That said, maybe there are workaround I don't know about. I'm just going on what I discovered playing mr.potato head with my x21, x22 and x24.

Nope, not going to be doable.
Anyway the X24 has a bit better screen than the X20. [X20 was my first ever Thinkpad].
Look for the ones with built in wifi antenna's.

I used to own a top-end ThinkPad X24 with 1.13 CPU, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth (however I removed the BT card because I wanted both WiFi and Ethernet and could live without BT and modem), ran 2000 pretty well (I believe I used a BCM4318 wireless card... my typical choice for T23 and X2x with WiFi to upgrade the stock card because it appears to work great on these models, also these predate the 1802 error so no patch is required for better cards)
