Why can't Windows 10 be installed on an X41 Tablet?
I vaguely remember someone on these forums mention there was a hardware constraint on the X41 Tablet that prevented Windows 10 from being successfully installed, making 8.1 the newest version of Windows to be compatible. Is this true? If it is, why is this, specifically?

Probably the lack of stable or fully-functional drivers for all of the hardware.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

Re: Why can't Windows 10 be installed on an X41 Tablet?
Well, Windows 8.1 install will be super sketchy because the iGPU inside these things do NOT support DirectX 9.0, making Windows 7 the newest official OS that it can work with
Windows 10 will work but with no video card drivers installed and overall experience will be greatly hindered by that

Re: Why can't Windows 10 be installed on an X41 Tablet?
Main reason is PAE. All fsb 533 MHz P-M only. x41 is 400MHz means no PAE (currently on soldered down P-M only, except socketed CPU many of them are unfortunately 400fsb except for other notebooks based on 915 chipset support 533 fsb processors like T43/R52 and other brands. I will not risk doing 10 on 1st Gen i-core as well (no mouse except for external mouse).

I've had no problems with trackpoint on my X201 or internal pointing devices on Precision M6500 with Windows 10. I don't use them heavily though so if it's an intermittent issue I might have just not noticed.thinkpadcollection wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2017 6:58 amI will not risk doing 10 on 1st Gen i-core as well (no mouse except for external mouse).
I seem to recall an issue with Windows 10 not having a driver for the cardreader on some older machines but I haven't been able to verify it.
I've done Windows 10 upgrade on pretty much every machine I have that will run it just to make sure I have the licenses in case I need to use it later; oldest one is Precision M70. My T42 has the same issue as the X41 with no PAE. I believe that one could have the CPU upgraded to one that would work but I decided it wasn't worth the trouble.
Also I believe this generation of CPUs actually did support PAE but just didn't have the flag to show it. Some linux distros have the option to ignore the lack of flag and ISTR there was some hack to do that for Windows as well.

All the X41 CPUs support NX and PAE, even the 400mhz ones.thinkpadcollection wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2017 6:58 amMain reason is PAE. https://ark.intel.com/products/27610/In ... 00-MHz-FSB
for the LV and ULV Pentium M processors, Intel initially flagged the ones supporting PAE and NX with J suffix, but later, higher end models all comes with it.
Those ones are harder to tell.
But the regular Pentium M has a dead obvious naming schemes to differentiate. The ones that support NX and PAE for the regular Pentium M processors has a model number of 7x0 and FSB of 533mhz, while the ones that don't have either a model number of 7x5 or none and a FSB of 400mhz
My OptiPlex 755 desktop with a LGA771 Xeon works perfectly, if not faster in Windows 10.thinkpadcollection wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2017 6:58 amI will not risk doing 10 on 1st Gen i-core as well (no mouse except for external mouse).
Even my T43 with ATI graphics works perfectly in Windows 10 as well, though may not be as responsive at times.

Re: Why can't Windows 10 be installed on an X41 Tablet?
Just that a thing with performance is not too much different from C2D 3.33 vs 1st gen i core even T410 has bug that I could not have highest clock with 2 processors in use even with i7-640m so I didn't bother to fix the trackpad/trackpoint issue on T410 with win10 Pro.

Try running actual benchmarks and see if you actually cannot reach the real speed or it is just task manager screwing up with the numbers. I have that problem with my Xeon X3363 which shows on task manager when utilising 100% as 2.58Ghz and 80% CPU usage, while the truth is 3.20Ghz OC and 100%.thinkpadcollection wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2017 9:23 pmJust that a thing with performance is not too much different from C2D 3.33 vs 1st gen i core even T410 has bug that I could not have highest clock with 2 processors in use even with i7-640m so I didn't bother to fix the trackpad/trackpoint issue on T410 with win10 Pro.

Re: Why can't Windows 10 be installed on an X41 Tablet?
The clocking were reported in both HWMonitor and CPU-Z. I see this same thing with other users reporting poor clocking with T410 as well especially with up to date bios. Even I tried swapping i7-620m and i7-640m. Other brands of notebooks based on 1st gen i-core reported better clocking since I had Dell and HP notebooks based on 1st-gen dual i-core worked on.
How's is the T510 frequency? If so, I'd consider switch over to T510 to get better use of it reusing parts from T410 computers otherwise T520 or T530.

while i dont have a 1st gen Core i product, I suggest you to investigate in cpuz whether its the multiplier or the fsb that is abnormal and start to troubleshoot from there.
does Windows 7 and 10 actually gives you a huge difference in cpu scores?

Re: Why can't Windows 10 be installed on an X41 Tablet?
Both T410, one with GPU got win 10 Pro upgraded from Win 7 pro and other one with integrated GPU T410 kept Win 7 Pro both are 64bit as well. No change in max frequencies for both except win 7 Pro worked properly with trackpoint and touchpad while the Win 10 Pro does not work on T410 with GPU.
