RAM from sources other than Lenovo voids warranty?

#1 Post by coburn » Wed Jun 22, 2005 9:04 am

I ordered an X32 yesterday and had planned to order a gig of ram from crucial or some other source.

Just got off the phone with a Lenovo representative who told me that using RAM from sources other than Lenovo voids their warranty. I specifically mentioned Crucial, etc. He said...No you have to buy it from us.

Has anyone heard of this? Do you know where it says this in the warranty?

Also, he said that the stock 256 MB is soldered onto the board and is not removable. Is that true.

Thanks so much for your help!

Update

Well, I think that the sales side was trying to put one over on me.

I just got off the phone with the technical support / warranty side (800-426-7378) and they stated:

A: that adding additional RAM from a third party source does not void the laptop warranty. However, they obviously can't warranty the RAM of the third party source which makes complete sense.

B: that there are two sockets of RAM on the X32. Neither of them are soldered.

If anyone has personal experience about either of the above scenarios, would love to hear about it.

Thanks!

They're lying. Crucial is fine.

On the other hand, how would they know if you didn't tell them? If you have to send it in for service, you'll be removing everything that isn't part of the problem anyway, wouldn't you? Well, you would if you read item #5 in the FAQ.

absolute BS..

though they WILL blame "other" RAM for any esoteric problems..

i sell goldenram and all that i have ever used for myself works just fine..
(except for the 770E series, which had to have special memory designed for it)

and only a few failed parts for customers and all those fall under lifetime warranty..

so, but whatever you wish but i suggest a name brand..
crucial falls into that category, now..

Not only are both user replaceable, both are also very easily accessible, located behind a panel at bottom center.

Save yourself some money. Buy LESS memory from Lenovo and MORE from a third party where it's more economical. Just make sure you choose memory with a lifetime warranty from a reputable dealer.
