How to hook up an external monitor to an X41 tablet???

#1 Post by ozone » Sun Jun 26, 2005 6:08 pm

I had an X31 with a full size dock (all bought off EBay) at the office before I had to give to my student. I had it connected to a 15" 1024 by 768 LCD. The image was okay. Because the LCD resolution matched the native resolution of the X31 screen, all was fine.

What if I want to hook up a monitor with greater resolution, say a wide screen, or a 19" CRT that can go up to 1600 by 1200? Can the X31 be configured to extend the laptop desktop to the monitor or at least reproduce the desktop at a much higher resolution automatically everytime the X31 is docked?

I know I tried the X31 at home with a larger CRT but it never seemed to quite work when I was playing around with the advanced display settings. I don't want the hassle of always reconfiguring my desktop screens whenever I dock the ThinkPad.

I'm thinking of getting an X41 tablet and I'd like to have a larger monitor hooked up than what I had before.

I know that the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 core can handle dual displays, because I've done it (on a Dell). I can only assume that the Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (used in the X41 (tablet and non)) does, as well.

Thanks... I know the X31 can handle dual displays - and so I assume the X41 tablet will be able to... what I'm wondering about is if such handling can be set to happen automatically.

I believe it does - just switch it so it's using both the LCD and CRT, and it did happen automatically on the Dells that I was working with.

I spoke to an IBM tech rep here in Canada and she indicated that the way to get the X series to 'automatically' adjust to the monitor you have at your desk is to use IBM's Presentation Director. It's not fully automated as with Apple computers: for the Apples, you just plug them in and they will automatically span your desktop over the two screens. But with Presentation Director, you should be able to quickly output to a preconfigured monitor setting you inputted earlier by just pushing a few buttons (options).

Has any had much luck or success with Presentation Director on the X series?
