how to find serial # when label gone and motherboard dead?

#1 Post by supernova87a » Sat Jul 16, 2005 12:45 pm

Hi friends,

I am inspecting an X31 laptop from a fixer-upper purchase, and would like to figure out how to read off the serial number to check the warranty. Trouble is, the relevant labels have come off the bottom of the machine, and the motherboard is screwed.

Any ideas how I can get the information off of it?

Thanks!

If the HD was working when the MB died, then the model number and serial number are in the Windows registry.

Can you be more specific about the MB symptoms than "screwed"? E.g., dead, mostly dead, etc., etc.

thanks for your reply!

Unfortunately, the hard drive was not included in the purchase, and the motherboard is dead, as in: no LEDs on when dc power/battery inserted, and absolutely no response when power button pushed...

I was hoping that the problem was the frequently reported "cmos battery" needing to be drained/replaced to boot up, but I have the feeling this is worse, like power input hardware messed up..

ah well, I may sell it for parts.

I'm guessing a motherboard replacement would be several hundred $$?
