Thanks

For models you can check tabook. For prices there are Bill's site, lenovo, pricegrabber and countless other sites ...

Cold deal. Like New, not New, sealed in box.

Does this mean its used? or refurbished?
And how much performance difference would I see with the 1.4 ghz and my 1.6 ghz centrino?

It hard to tell because the Seller didn't spell it out on purpose. It could be used.

That's the link to the VISA deal, you can use it for to compare the price.

That link has various reviews. Some with bench mark.

It means it's used, although allegedly in excellent condition. That's an educational model; you won't find that exact model on Lenovo's general site, though you can find X40's with similar specs. Check the tabook The onsite warranty is standard on that educational model, while most (all?) non-ed models have a 1 or 3 year depot warranty, upgradeable to onsite for $$ or $$$. Contrary to what the seller claims, onsite does not mean next business-day service "wherever you are in the world".

The seller lists the date the warranty expires, though not the actual serial number of the unit. Without the S/N there's no way for you to independently verify the seller's claim. Most Ebay sellers do not list TP serials - and my experience is that of those who don't, most will refuse to do so if asked, generally giving bogus reasons.

If this unit is 100% as claimed, the price for a similar new X40 w/ optional 3-year onsite warranty added on Lenovo's VISA site is $1820 + tax, or about $360 more than the seller's buy it now price for his used unit with (maybe) about 2.5 years of warranty remaining. It may be a good deal to you, or YMMV. Personally, I wouldn't consider bidding on it without having the S/N and verifying the warranty with Lenovo, and without emailing bill@thinkpads.com to get a quote from him first.

As for the 1.4 vs 1.6 question, there probably is no noticeable difference, especially since your 1.6GHz has 1 gig of memory and this X40 has 512M.

^ thanks alot for the information. I talked him down to a good price. He said it was used for a couple weeks, which doesnt really bother me.

I have asked for the serial number as well.

What do you guys think...should I go for it?

Personally, I would get either the X32 or X41. The X40 is like a weak sibbling got stuck between two stronger brothers.

Find yourself a friendly IBM Employee. You will get the X41 for about the same price :)

Do you mean that there WILL be a difference or NOT be?
Here is my thinking
1.6GHz 1 gig < 1.4GHz 512mb ?

I think azX32 got a bit confused, but he probably meant that you will see more difference due to the RAM, rather than the CPU, which is true. An 1.4 with 1 gig RAM will be faster than an 1.6 with 512 M RAM on everything but compiling.

Yes I agree - more memory is more important than slight differences in CPU speed.
