Thinkpad Laptop Sleeve/ Ram from IBM/ Accident Coverage

#1 Post by Stunt101 » Mon Aug 01, 2005 3:33 pm

Hey,

As many of you know from my previous thread, I am going to order an x41 tablet from my university. However, I have some options:

First, for 20 bucks, I can get the official x41 tablet sleeve. Does anyone have it, and is it a worthwhile product? Is there another comparable item I should be looking at?

Also, I want to increase the ram on my computer, which will come with 512 installed. I will either get a 512 mb or 1 gig stick. With student discount, a 1 gig stick is 204 bucks, and 512 mb is 78. Is this a ripoff? Keep in mind that even if I buy the ram through the student discount, I still have to install it myself.

Finally, do any of you have the extended protection for accidents? I recently cracked the lcd of my x40, and had I known that additional coverage was available, I certainly would have bought it. Do you suggest I get the 2 or 4 year plan?

I know I have been asking a lot of questions lately, but hopefully your answers will help users who share my situation. Thanks in advance for your help.

Check the memory price at Crucial.com.

I do not have X41T, but I think the sleeve worths the money. www.sfbags.com (waterfield) has some nice bag, but very expensive.

Stunt101-

I would recommend getting your ram from crucial.com or newegg.com. Their prices are significantly less than IBM, even with discount.

As for the sleeve, I believe it retails for about $50, so you are getting a good deal. Not having recieved mine yet, I cannot comment on the quality or usefulness...but for $20 I would get it and not think twice. Worst case scenario, you will have a backup.

I've never purchased the accidental damage protection before, but I just ordered a new T42 for myself with it - I got to thinking, and as the notebooks get smaller and lighter I end up carrying it with me more places, and figured the extra $100 or so would probably end up being a cheap insurance policy.

Get a sleeve from Tom Bihn Brain Cell.

www.tombihn.com

It's a bit bulkier than a tight fitting sleeve, but it has hard sides and cradles your laptop on the bottom just like a baby. Cannot tell what the "official" X41 tablet sleeve is but most sleeves are nothing more than exactly that: a lightly padded tighly fitting sleeve that protects from scrapes and scatches, not bangs and dings.
