Critique: X31 VS x31

#1 Post by antaresvi » Fri Jun 25, 2004 8:48 pm

I'm deciding between two X31s.

#1: 1.4 ghz, 256m ram, media slice, cdrw/dvd, 40 gig hdd, one yr warr, $1619

#2: 1.7ghz, 256m ram, 40 gig hdd, 3 yr warranty, $1499

I need a docking station and CDRW, so i was thinking if i went for the #2, I could get the x3 and drive on ebay or something OR get a regular docking station and usb burner elsewhere.

ANyway, I'm leaning towards #1. Opinions?

Actually, I would choose #2. The 3 year warranty and faster CPU really worth it. A new UltraBase costs $200, and an UltraBay 2000 CD-RW/DVD around $100 on Ebay. Or you can get a Portable Bay 2000 with USB/PCMCIA connectivity from Ebay again around $100, which supports UltraBay 2000 devices, so you won't need the UltraBase at all.

You can't upgrade the processor, but you can definitely upgrade a CDRW.

I bought an X31 without the media slice and just bought a wireless router - I can install pretty much everything to my computer over the wireless network hooked up to my desktop. Router was ~$70 USD.

It's USB 1. Have you tried to use it via PCMCIA? It should be much faster.
