Weird Power supply/battery problem with X40

#1 Post by tp8181 » Thu Aug 18, 2005 2:18 pm

Hey guys. When I unplug my X40 to switch to battery life the whole computer freezes up!! I have talked to tech support and installed new battery maximizer/power management drivers and am still having this problem. Have any of you ran into this issue?

If you've got either an UltraBase X4, an X4 Dock, or a USB CD-ROM (burners and DVD drives will also work), boot a Linux live CD. If it lets you switch from AC to battery without a freeze, reinstall Windows - there's something wrong in there. Otherwise, the laptop is broken.

yeah, it almost sounds like an actual power supply problem. Or something internal.

It should be a windows problem, when you plugin the AC there are a lot of thinkgs changed - display brightness, CPU speed etc. Maybe the drivers are in troubles.
Let's go'n'restart :-)

You're probably right. just thought that, given there's a switch from AC power to battery power, a circuit or something may kick in or overload and cause the whole system to hang. Let's hope it's a driver!

The last post on this subject was in August, so I hope this information doesn't come too late. I was experiencing the exact same problem and it was driving me crazy.

I found the following at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4ZLNJB:

Note:
Systems with the Intel 2200 or Intel 2915 wireless adapter may hang when the power is disconnected. In some rare cases, when an Intel 2200 or 2915 wireless adapter is updated to the latest version (9.0.1.21), the system may freeze when the power is disconnected from the system. To work-around this issue you will need to change your graphics properties.

Right-click the desktop.
Click Properties.
Click the Settings tab.
Click the Advanced button.
Click Intel Extreme Graphics 2 for Mobile.
Click the Graphic Options button.
Click the Power Scheme Settings button.
Uncheck the box for the "Intel Dual-Frequency Graphics Technology".
Click Apply.
Click OK.

I tried this and it did fix the problem. I don't know what the setting was suppossed to do, but not having it is worth being able to now unplug my laptop and move somewhere else.

Hope this helped,
Tony

Sorry all, the link in the previous post should not include the ':' at the end.
