#1 Post by Hrvig » Sun Aug 21, 2005 8:03 am

Hey guys.
Ive just ordered a x31 for school use. Im just wondering if it is able to run Adobe Photoshop proberly?
Here is a link, I know its in danish but it doesnt really matter :D
http://www.edbpriser.dk/Listprices.asp?ID=57941
Ive ordered it with 512 ram.

Was also wondering if I should install Norton Internet Security 2004 or 2005?
Heard that 2005 is taking up too much of the CPU?

512MB of RAM should be enough for casual Photoshop use. For heavy work with lots of layers and objects, get 1GB to be safe.

I don't use Norton Internet Security, so I have no idea whether 2004 or 2005 is better.

Norton Internet Security?

Stay far away.

For antivirus, run either Avast or AVG. Both have free versions - I prefer Avast's feature set, but AVG is lower resources. (I run Avast)

For anti-spyware, run the triple threat of Microsoft AntiSpyware (free), Spybot S&D (free), and AdAware (free for the scan-only version)

For a firewall, what's your usage pattern? If you're going to be behind a HW firewall all the time, just use the XP SP2 firewall. Otherwise, ZoneAlarm, Kerio Personal Firewall, and Sygate Personal Firewall are all good (and free) choices.

Hmm... first things first: Norton's not free. Second, it's pretty bloated. Third, it digs hooks into Windows, and can cause major problems (that mostly applies to the corporate version, which is known for causing horrible problems with MS Office and WordPerfect, but there are some issues with the consumer versions too).

Now, linkies:

Antivirus: (one or the other)
Avast
AVG Free Edition

Antispyware: (if you only want one, go for MSAS. I recommend all three)
MSAS Beta
Spybot Search & Destroy
AdAware SE Personal Edition

Firewall: (only use one)
XP SP2 firewall - go to Control Panel>Security Center to manage it
ZoneAlarm Free
Kerio Personal Firewall (careful, it's crippleware)
Sygate Personal Firewall (it does NOT integrate into XP SP2, so you'll have to fight the Security Center to stop complaining about there being no firewall, when there really is one...)

Well, I have already brought Norton for my desktop, do you still think I should use one of the others?

Can you return the Norton suite (as in, have you opened it?)

If yes, then do so, and do what I suggested for the desktop, as well. If you've got a hardware firewall (such as a cheap router), the XP SP2 firewall will suffice on the desktop (if, of course, you're running XP SP2 :P)

If not, eBay it or something.

If you've already installed it, have fun getting Norton to let go of Windows :P You should be able to get it MOSTLY out, but not QUITE completely - their stuff leaves lots of loose ends.

The absolute very first thing I did when I rec'd my X40 a year ago was to remove Norton AV. If I recall, there's a page on Norton's site which explains how to manually remove it. I have it saved as a .pdf so if you can't find it send me a message with your email and I can email it to you.
