X31 bios upgrade problem

I have an X31 model 2672, purchased when they first came out. I'm fastidious about updating and have kept up with all changes as they were rolled out. I'm running XP and have a pretty vanilla setup.

Problem is that I have not been able to do a bios upgrade since v 2.14. Prior to that it worked every revision. The upgrade will start and boot to the DOS mode menu and after going through the warning screens will sit on the "please wait and don't reboot your machine" forever.

If I reboot/reset the old bios is still there, leading me to believe that it never actually got started.

I've done ALL the troubleshooting steps, reset bios to defaults, haven't got it passworded, tried with the ultrabase on, off etc. etc. It's not a major problem, but it does worry me a bit. I'm concerned about being unable to update if a bug is found. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I need a new motherboard/flash rom? I'm sure I have REV A

Have you tried using the Software Installer to do the upgrade?

Are you also upgrading the embedded controller?

I think there must be a bug somewhere...
No matter what I try, I cannot get the Embedded Controller beyond Version 1.04.
The BIOS can be updated to the newest version 3.01
I have tried returning to older BIOS and Embedded Controller, and updating from that point, but '
The Embedded Controller always stops at version 1.04

(Booting to the DOS mode menu and through the warning screens different faults appear:
A: "please wait and don't reboot your machine" for eternity;
B: "Timeout";
C: "DIVIDE ERROR"
D: "½Screen full of SSSSSSSSSSSSS."
Hope somebody has a solution.

Sorry that you are in the same boat, but glad that it is not just me! I was going to call tech support and see if they had an answer, though I have little patience for telephone tech support and really hate having to explain things multiple times
