How involved is installing Bluetooth & wifi in an X30?

#1 Post by Surfrider » Sat Aug 27, 2005 8:06 pm

I have an older X30 (2672-42U) that, according to tawbook.pdf has no provisions for either Bluetooth or wifi. I would like to have both bluetooth and wifi onboard.

I know that this is POSSIBLE, but I have no idea as to the cost involved, or the difficulty of performing the procedure. What am I looking at in terms of monetary investment, time investement, etc, etc?

Any pointers, suggestings, pictures, links, and et cetera would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

PS: It may be important to note that I am not a layman; I have built many, many a system over the years, but all were desktop machines, and servers. This would be my first laptop dissection. :)

You might look at the Hardware Maintainence Manual for your X30. If there are no internal slots for wifi and bluetooth, you're looking at pc-cards, which are obviously trivial to install.

Perhaps I should have specified, but I was wondering more about installing the antennas than anything. :)

Did you ever find out how to install wifi and antennas in an X30 that was not upgradable? I am about to get one.

You can refer to my other thread about installing wireless card and antennas in my X22. The process might be similar. I have antennas under the keyboard. The reception isn't as strong as a pcmcia card, but it's still good.
X22 - 800mhz - 640MB RAM - 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm 7k100
X40 - 1.4ghz - 1.5GB RAM - 8GB Transcend 300x CF on Addonics CF/IDE Adapter
T42p - 1.8ghz - 15" UXGA - 1GB RAM - 160GB HDD
X61t - C2D 1.6ghz - 12.1" SXGA+ - 8GB RAM - Intel G3 300GB SSD

I have the same model x30. I considered trying to do a wifi mod but ultimately decided against it. It simply seemed like too much trouble. I use a 3Com X-Jack wifi card, which has a retractable antenna. It's nearly as good as having built-in wireless, and the reception is great. I recommend it highly.
